Paper Wars

Paper Wars first and foremost is a game and games review magazine. Each issue includes approximately 6 or more detailed game reviews on both new and old wargames. We don’t discriminate against the older games here… In addition, each issue includes a full wargame produced in color, incorporating the same high production qualities you’ve come to expect from Compass.

This time Tobruk fell, and it did so in a swirling action lasting less than a single day.

  7. Issue 98: Magazine & Game (First Blood in the Crimea, Alma)

First Blood in the Crimea: The Battle of the Alma, 20 September 1854. This game uses the alternating-actions system introduced here in Wagram. That system places the emphasis on players’ mastery of overall operations rather than on the minutiae of tactics. In effect, players role-play each side’s supreme commander, making the decisions those two men would make rather than the whole command chain, as is often the case many complex tactical-level games.

  8. Issue 97: Magazine & Game (Battle for Galicia)

Battle for Galicia, 1914 models the opening campaign of World War One fought between Imperial Russia and Austria-Hungary on the plains of Galicia and southern Poland. Simulated are the concurrent offensives launched by the two belligerents; the Austro-Hungarian thrust northward direction Lublin and the Russian concentric attack aimed at Lemberg. This is an easy to learn game system combines simple mechanics (although not simplistic) with a historically accurate map and order of battle; the synthesis of the maneuver, effectiveness recovery and combat resolution sub-systems highlight the important aspects of the campaign. The game system is not only fun and exciting to play but offers the gamer a true insight into this fascinating little-known campaign.
